The basketball hoop is a fun athletics buildable item added in the Playground Update. It works in both survival mode and creative playground mode, perfect for mini-games with friends after exploring the backyard and fighting bugs.
Step 1: Craft the Basketball Hoop
First, you need to unlock and build the basketball hoop from the construction menu.
Standing Basketball Hoop Recipe
2 × Web Fiber
2 × Grass Plank
1 × Weed Stem
Simply gather the materials, open your build wheel, navigate to Storage & Utilities > Athletics, then place the standing basketball hoop on flat ground.

A second variant, the Wall-mounted Basketball Hoop, can be attached directly to walls for space-saving base designs.
Step 2: Get a Basketball to Shoot
You cannot score without a ball. Grounded has two official basketball items:
Berry Basketball
Pupa Basketball
Equip the basketball in your hotbar. Hold your attack button to charge up a throw; the longer you charge, the farther the ball flies. Release to shoot toward the hoop.
Step 3: How to Score
When your basketball passes fully through the net from front to back, spark effects will appear to confirm a successful score.
Rocks and random items can pass through the hoop visually, but only dedicated basketball items register properly for playground triggers.
Bank shots off the backboard work just like real-world basketball hoops.
You can play free-throw competitions with your friends in multiplayer.
Advanced Function: Playground Mode Trigger Logic
The biggest feature of the basketball hoop in creative Playground mode is its trigger system. Every successful shot sends a signal you can link to other devices:
Left-click the basketball hoop to create a logic connection arrow.
Move the arrow to target devices and click again to confirm linking.
Popular trigger combinations:
Link to Fireworks: Launch fireworks every time someone scores a basket
Link to Scoreboard / Counter: Track total shots made
Link to Doors or Spawners: Unlock a gate after reaching a set score, ideal for custom mini-game dungeons
Useful Tips for Better Shots
Build a small platform or stair tower to adjust your shooting height, which makes aiming much easier.
Clear grass, pebblets and obstacles around the hoop to avoid blocking the ball.
Test different charging durations to master shot arc and distance.
For multiplayer tournaments, build multiple hoops to create your own backyard basketball court.
