Installing an in-ground basketball hoop requires proper concrete foundation work. Correct installation guarantees stability and avoids leaning or safety hazards after years of outdoor use. Below is the standard step-by-step guide for installing an anchor-sleeve style in-ground basketball system, the most common design we supply.

How to mount a basketball hoop in the ground?

Tools & Materials You Will Need

Digging shovel / post hole digger

Ready-mix concrete

Gravel

Tape measure, level tool

Wooden stakes and string (for marking position)

Anchor sleeve supplied with basketball hoop

Protective gloves, safety eyewear

Step 1: Choose & Mark the Location

Leave at least 10–15 feet of clear space in front of the hoop for safe shooting.

Keep away from power lines, trees, buildings and underground utility pipes.

Mark the center position for your foundation hole.

Step 2: Dig the Foundation Hole

Hole size reference (standard residential in-ground hoop):

Depth: 36 inches (90 cm) minimum; 42 inches (105 cm) recommended for cold climates to avoid frost heave

Width: 18–24 inches diameter

Tilt the bottom slightly wider for better concrete grip. Add 4–6 inches of gravel at the hole bottom for drainage to stop water pooling around the sleeve.

Step 3: Place & Level the Anchor Sleeve

Lower the anchor sleeve into the center of the hole.

Use stakes and temporary bracing to hold the sleeve upright.

Check vertically with a level repeatedly during pouring. The sleeve must stay perfectly straight.

Step 4: Pour Concrete

Slowly pour concrete around the anchor sleeve. Tap concrete gently to remove air bubbles.

Leave around 2–3 inches of space at the top of the hole for soil or grass restoration.

Critical Note: Do NOT insert the basketball pole into the sleeve right now.

Step 5: Allow Concrete Full Curing

Let concrete cure completely. We recommend minimum 72 hours before installing the pole. For best strength, wait 7 full days. Early installation causes shifting.

Step 6: Install the Basketball Pole & Attach Components

After curing, lift the steel pole and slide it firmly into the anchor sleeve. Fasten locking bolts.

Attach the support arms, backboard, breakaway rim, safety net and padding in sequence following product instructions.

Adjust the rim height to 10 feet official height and double-check all bolts are fully tightened.

Important Safety & Pro Tips

Install the foundation below local frost line if you live in cold regions to prevent frost heave pushing the foundation upward.

Do not shorten the recommended hole depth to save labor. Shallow foundations will lean over time.

Regularly re-tighten all bolts twice per year, especially after storms.

If you lack digging experience or heavy lifting tools, hire professional installers.
